Elegy for Kosovo

1999
Oil and wax on canvas; 30 x 78 inches (76 x 198 cm)

Elegy for Kosovo is part of a series of paintings examining evil. The domestic and international wars of the last decade of the 20th century and the early 21st century stain our memories and weigh our spirits down as we mourn the innocent victims. The imagery in the paintings offers the feeling of meaning as an undefined sense of order. That is, the botanical, tombstone-like shapes glow red within symbolizing life and loss. Making art provides these necessary if momentary illusions of order giving us courage to live.
